How the hourly wage calculator works
Everything starts from weekly pay: your hourly rate multiplied by the hours you work in a week. Annual pay is weekly pay multiplied by the paid weeks in the year, which is 52 unless you change it.
Monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12. Fortnightly and 4-weekly pay are two and four weeks of weekly pay. Daily pay is weekly pay divided by the days you work each week.
Going the other way, your hourly rate is your annual salary divided by the hours you work in a year, which is hours per week multiplied by paid weeks.
- Weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week
- Annual pay = weekly pay × paid weeks per year
- Monthly pay = annual pay ÷ 12
- Hourly rate = annual pay ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

Why 52 weeks, and why do some calculators use 52.14?
A year has 365 days (366 in a leap year) and a week has 7, so a year is 52 weeks and 1 day: 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14 weeks. Multiplying by 52 covers only 364 days.
Using 52 is the usual convention for turning weekly pay into annual pay, and it is our default. A calculator that uses 52.14 gives a figure about 0.3% higher, which is roughly £80 more on a £30,000 salary. Neither is wrong; they answer slightly different questions.
You can use 52.14, or any number from 1 to 53, under More options.
Does 52 weeks include paid holiday?
For most people, yes. Almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year (GOV.UK), and a salary already includes it, so 52 paid weeks is normal.
If you are paid only for the hours you work and get no paid holiday, use fewer paid weeks. If your employer pays holiday pay on top of your hourly rate, ask how it is worked out.
Gross pay and take-home pay
This calculator shows gross pay: what you earn before income tax and National Insurance. What reaches your bank account is lower. Income tax is different in Scotland, which affects take-home pay but not the gross figures here.
Working more than 48 hours a week
You cannot normally work more than 48 hours a week on average, usually averaged over 17 weeks, unless you opt out (GOV.UK). Some jobs are exceptions. If you enter more than 48 hours we show a note, but we still calculate your figures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the paid weeks in the year (52 for a full year). For example, £13.50 × 37.5 hours × 52 weeks = £26,325 a year before tax.
What is £13.50 an hour annually in the UK?
£26,325 a year before tax, if you work 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks. That is £2,193.75 a month and £506.25 a week.
What is £30,000 a year per hour in the UK?
£15.38 an hour before tax, if you work 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks (£30,000 ÷ 1,950 hours). At 40 hours a week it is £14.42 an hour.
What is £25,000 a year per hour in the UK?
£12.82 an hour before tax, if you work 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks (£25,000 ÷ 1,950 hours).
How do I work out my hourly pay from my yearly salary?
Divide your annual salary by the hours you work in a year, which is hours per week × paid weeks. For example, £35,000 ÷ (40 × 52 = 2,080 hours) = £16.83 an hour.
What does "37.5 an hour" mean: £37.50 an hour or 37.5 hours a week?
People mean both. £37.50 an hour for 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks is £73,125 a year. A 37.5-hour week at £15 an hour is £29,250 a year. Enter the hourly rate and the weekly hours separately to avoid mixing them up.
Why do you use 52 weeks, when other calculators use 52.14?
A year is 365 days, or 52.14 weeks. Using 52 is the usual convention for turning weekly pay into annual pay; 52.14 gives about 0.3% more. You can set either under More options. Read the full explanation.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. The figures are gross pay, before income tax and National Insurance, so your take-home pay will be lower.
Is the maximum working week 48 hours?
You cannot normally work more than 48 hours a week on average, usually averaged over 17 weeks, unless you opt out. Some jobs are exceptions. See GOV.UK.
